JOHNSTON COUNTY, N.C. — A soldier amazed her father on Thursday by showing up at the courtroom where he works as a detention officer.

Kayla Ferrell, of Four Oaks, has been in the Army for more than five years and was stationed in Afghanistan for the past four months. Since she wasn't due home until July, her dad, Lt. James Ferrell, and a Johnston County courtroom full of people got quite the surprise.

With the help of Judge Joy Jones, Kayla’s family and friends organized the reunion in a Johnston County Courtroom where her dad works a detention officer, escorting people from jail to court.

Mr. Ferrell was stunned when his daughter came down the aisle, and the pair hugged and cried while the entire courtroom erupted into cheers and applause.

“I’m so happy," Kayla said afterwards. "I missed my daddy.”

Through tears, Mr. Ferrell said her worries about Kayla every day. "It's just a big weight lifted off my shoulders, worrying every day when I text her and she doesn't answer," he said.

"To see her today is amazing."
