RAEFORD, N.C. — A soldier was killed in a Thursday morning crash at Fort Bragg, authorities said.

The crash occurred at about 9:15 a.m. on Raeford-Vass Road near Plank Road when a military 18-wheeler ran into the back of a military backhoe, authorities said.

The driver of the 18-wheeler died at the scene, and other soldiers, who were on their way to a training range on post, had to be extricated from the vehicle, authorities said.

"The accidental death of this soldier is tragic. My thoughts and prayers are with the family,” Col. Scott Pence, Fort Bragg garrison commander, said in a statement.

The soldier hasn't been identified, pending notification of family.

No other details of the crash were available.
