Soldier from Mississippi killed in Afghanistan

Staff Sgt. William S. Ricketts died at Bala Murghab, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when insurgents attacked his unit with small-arms fire, the military said.

FORT BRAGG, N.C. — A Fort Bragg-based soldier died Saturday in Afghanistan, the Department of Defense announced Monday.

Staff Sgt. William S. Ricketts, 27, of Corinth, Miss., died at Bala Murghab, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when insurgents attacked his unit with small-arms fire, the military said.

Ricketts was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division. He was on his fifth deployment overseas and third to Afghanistan.

He is survived by his wife, Susanna Ricketts; two sons, William and Oliver; and parents, William and Sandra Ricketts, of Glenn, Miss.
