Soldier from Fort Bragg dies in Afghanistan

A Fort Bragg-based soldier died Wednesday when insurgents attacked his unit using an improvised explosive device in the Helmand province, Afghanistan.

FORT BRAGG, N.C. — A Fort Bragg-based soldier died Wednesday when insurgents attacked his unit using an improvised explosive device in the Helmand province, Afghanistan. 

Spc. James A. Butz, 21, of Porter, Ind. was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division.

Butz, a combat medic, joined the army in 2009. He received the Purple Heart, the Army Commendation Medal and the Afghanistan Campaign Medal, among others, in what was his first deployment to Afghanistan.
