Smithfield police investigate false report of kidnapping

Smithfield, N.C. — Smithfield police investigated a false report of a kidnapping at 515 Outlet Center Dr. in Smithfield, authorities said.
A witness reported seeing a woman and child forced into a car outside the Firehouse Subs restaurant near the Carolina Premium Outlets.
An initial report determined a kidnapping did not take place.
Police are still investigating the possibility of a crime because of suspicious activity.
