SMITHFIELD, N.C. — Police on Wednesday canceled a Silver Alert issued late Sunday for a man visiting his family in Smithfield.

Lawrence Leon Parrish, 74, apparently returned to his home in Virginia and was safe, police said.

He had been with relatives in Smithfield, and they reported him missing when he was late returning to Virginia, police said.

Authorities were searching for a Smithfield man with a cognitive impairment who was reported missing late Sunday.

Developed in 2007, the Silver Alert systems quickly notifies the public about missing, endangered adults who have cognitive impairments. It also allows caregivers and nursing homes to report a person missing. In the past, only a family member could report an adult missing.
