DURHAM, N.C. — A Durham shopping center was evacuated Wednesday morning after someone smelled natural gas.

Around 8:30 a.m., emergency crews filled the parking lot of a strip mall at 2945 S. Miami Boulevard, near the corner of U.S. Highway 70.

It appeared dozens of patrons and employees had evacuated the plaza. Sky 5 video showed them standing in a grassy area away from the business entrances.

The shopping center contains a Gussy's Place restaurant, a veterinary hospital, a Jersey Mike's and a Piper's in the Park, among others.
