PARKTON, N.C. — One person died when a small plane crashed Sunday afternoon in Robeson County, Sheriff Kenneth Sealey.

The single-engine plane crashed in a wooded area about two miles from the 1100 block of East Parkton Tobermory Road, outside Parkton.

Authorities said they were not releasing many details, because the deceased's family had not yet been notified.

A nearby resident called 911 after hearing a loud noise, and deputies later found the crashed plane, authorities said.

Emergency responders, including state troopers, remained on the scene into Sunday night. Representatives of the Federal Aviation Administration were expected on Monday morning.
