RALEIGH, N.C. — Spring started 20 degrees colder than usual Wednesday, with high temperatures only in the 40s.

By the time spring officially arrives, at 5:58 p.m., a chilly rain will be falling in many parts of central and southeastern North Carolina.

A low-pressure system is hugging the North Carolina coast. As it moves north along the coastline, the Triangle’s chances for rain increase.

Rain in central North Carolina will be light, but heavier rain will hit the southeast areas, including Jacksonville.

Behind the rain is a gradual warmup that will eventually bring sunny skies and spring-like temperatures, emphasis on the gradual. Thursday will see the rain move out. There is about a 60 percent chance for showers through the early morning hours, but clouds stick around, holding temperatures in the 50s.

The sun truly returns on Friday, and temperatures rise along with it, to close to 60 degrees.

Saturday and Sunday will be mostly clear, warming into the low 70s before another front changes the weather again early next week.
