RALEIGH, N.C. — I always dreamed of being a “Stage Mom.” I know how ridiculous that sounds, but I grew up dancing and I loved it. I hoped my kids would share my love for dancing too.

After three failed attempts, I accepted my role on the sidelines, as a devoted “Soccer/Softball Mom.” But then last year, my dream of being a “Stage Mom” resurfaced, after a friend told me about an amazing musical theater program for kids in Raleigh. When my youngest Quinn voiced interest, I jumped at the chance to live my “Stage Mom” dream.

Durant Road Musical Theater (DRMT) has been providing children’s theater to the Raleigh area for more than 20 years.

DRMT has won many national awards, and Director Debbie Rollins has studied with Broadway legends. Rollins and her husband Dean share their love of musical theater with children of all ages (though most programs are for rising 4th graders through high school). No acting, singing or dancing experience is required. Everyone is welcome.

The latest production was “Junie B. Jones The Musical.” The students audition for various roles and then practice twice a week for 10-12 weeks before taking the stage in front of an audience. The shows are open to the public and run for two weekends.

The owners of DRMS invited me backstage on opening night for the ultimate “Stage Mom” experience. Musical theater had a different vibe than the dance world that I grew up in. I was amazed by the positivity, camaraderie and pure joy radiating from these theater kids. Before the kids took the stage, the cast stood in a circle, as the vivacious choreographer gave the kids an encouraging pep-talk. She told the kids that the “number rule was to have fun!” The kids definitely understood the assignment. The boys and girls sang and danced with so much passion, enthusiasm and confidence.

The crowd cheered as the performance ended and the children cheered even louder. They jumped up and down in celebration. They hugged each other and offered sweet words of congratulations.

It’s a tough world for kids these days. Many children suffer from anxiety and spend too much time on electronic devices. They don’t spend enough time doing what kids do best, having fun.

This “Stage Mom” couldn’t be happier with the performance, and her new role!
