Six indicted on federal child porn charges

A federal grand jury handed down indictments last week in six separate cases of child sex abuse and exploitation, the U.S. Attorney's Office said in a news release Tuesday.

All six cases include charges involving the receipt and possession of child pornography, but the U.S. Attorney's Office said the crimes charged cover a broad range of conduct.

Those indicted were:

  • Travis Dittrich, formerly of Pender County, on 15 counts of receiving child pornography and one count of possession of child pornography
  • Christopher Mark Surles, of Rocky Mount, on 15 counts of receiving child pornography and one count of possession of child pornography
  • Russell Biathrow, of Fayetteville, on 10 counts of receiving child pornography and one count of possession of child pornography
  • Daniel Carl Sherwin, of Elizabeth City, on 11 counts of manufacturing child pornography, seven counts of receiving child pornography and one count of possession of child pornography
  • Scott Alexander Frantz, formerly of Willow Springs, on one count of advertising and soliciting child pornography, nine counts of tranporting child pornography, 15 counts of receiving child pornography, one count of possession of child pornography and one count of transmitting obscene matter onver the Internet

Sherwin has a prior conviction related to child exploitation crimes,. Surles has a prior conviction related to child sexual abuse.
