Crews shut down one southbound lane of U.S. Highway 1 in Franklin County Wednesday morning due to a sinkhole.

Officials said the hole opened up between N.C. Highway 96 and U.S. 1-A after a pipe separation. Crews shut down the inside lane of the highway to begin repairs, and an additional lane closure on the northbound side is possible, North Carolina Department of Transportation officials said.

Repairs are scheduled to be completed late Thursday. Drivers should use extra caution in the area and should expect delays during peak travel times.
