RALEIGH, N.C. — Repair work on a sinkhole that opened Thursday on Hammond Road in south Raleigh will run through the early part of next week,  state Department of Transportation officials said.

The southbound lanes of the road will remain closed at Rush Street through the weekend while crews replace a pipe underneath the roadway. The pipe's failure caused the road to buckle and sink.

Southbound drivers on Hammond Road will have to turn onto Rush Street toward either South Saunders Street or Garner Road.

Delays are expected and drivers are encouraged to avoid the area, officials said. Northbound lanes of Hammond Road are not impacted by the sinkhole.
