STELLA, N.C. — Carteret County sheriff's deputies Wednesday issued then canceled a Silver Alert for 74-year-old Arthur Raymond Whitwood, of Stella, who was last seen driving on N.C. Highway 58 and who they said may suffer from dementia or other cognitive impairments.

They did not say if he had been found or where.

He was reported to be driving a silver and blue 1983 Chevrolet Suburban with a North Carolina license tag, but the registration number was not given.

Anyone with information about Whitfield was asked to contact Deputy Josh Matthews at 252-504-4800.

Developed in 2007, Silver Alert is a system to quickly notify the public about missing endangered adults who suffer from dementia or other cognitive impairments, such as Alzheimer's disease.

It also allows caregivers and nursing homes to report a person missing. In the past, only a family member could report an adult missing.
