CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — The Chapel Hill Police Department has ended its search Thursday for a 47 -year-old woman who is believe to be cognitively impaired.

A Silver Alert was issued for Janie McKinney, who was last seen on New Stateside Drive, around 3 a.m. It was canceled just after 7 a.m.

It wasn't clear why the alert was canceled or whether McKinney was found safe.

Developed in 2007, Silver Alert is a system to quickly notify the public about missing endangered adults who suffer from dementia or other cognitive impairments, such as Alzheimer's disease.

It also allows caregivers and nursing homes to report a person missing. In the past, only a family member could report an adult missing.
