SILER CITY, N.C. — A Siler City man has pleaded guilty to charges, including involuntary manslaughter, in the shooting death of his uncle.

Christopher N. Matthews, 36, of 131C Fletcher-Siler Road, was sentenced Thursday to 20 to 24 months in prison.

Matthews was initially charged with second-degree murder in the death of Donald Louis Scotton, 53, of 175 Fletcher-Siler Road.

Scotton was fatally shot in February 2007 at Matthews' home, authorities said. Witnesses told investigators that Scotton and Matthews had an argument that escalated into gunfire.

Authorities said Matthews provided a written statement after his arrest in which he said the shooting was a case of self-defense.

Matthews also pleaded guilty to felony possession of a firearm, stemming from the same incident. His sentences will be served concurrently.
