CARY, N.C. — After the state lifted its mask mandate, many people are flocking to get their hair cut, enjoy a manicure or a relaxing massage. But is it safe to be in such close quarters without a mask?

Even though the statewide mask mandate has been repealed, not every business is ready to drop their mask requirement. Employees at The Right Cut Barber Shop in Cary are still planning on wearing masks to keep customers safe.

"It was a relief to hear that we were taking steps to get back to normal," said Jesse Padilla, owner of the barber shop.

Padilla said many times throughout the past year, he wondered if his barber shop would make it.

"A lot of us took unemployment or other jobs," he said.

Jessica Dixon, infectious disease expert with WakeMed, said that The Right Cut is making a smart choice. Unless you and the person you’re working with are fully vaccinated you both should still wear masks, she said.

"It is definitely the safest choice to preferably have both people in that interaction wearing a mask," Dixon said.

Customers are allowed to choose whether or not they mask up in the store, Padilla said.

"We are able to exchange more conversations, and see their expressions and things like that so it is a more personal feeling now," he said.

Staff at The Right Cut plans on sticking with their pandemic protocols possibly until the end of the year.
