The book, a graphic novel about a teenager discovering they are non-binary and asexual, has ignited a fire among conservatives due to some of the sexual images. THE HARD COVER GOES FOR $25 AT BARNES &amp; NOBLE IF YOU WANT TO MAKE A DRIVE DOWN THE STREET. FOR THE BARGAIN SHOPPER WAL-MART WILL SELL YOU A COPY FOR $15 AND SOME CHANGE. THEY'VE BEEN SELLING A TON OF THESE BOOKS. I MEAN THIS HAS BECOME A POPULAR BOOK, A VERY WELL-KNOWN BOOK AFTER THE PAST YEAR. MOSTLY AFTER COMMUNITIES ACROSS THE COUNTRY REMOVED IT FROM THEIR PUBLIC LIBRARIES LIKE HERE IN WAKE COUNTY. ISN'T THAT AN INTERESTING CONUNDRUM. IT HAPPENS EVERY TIME A BOOK IS BANNED BY SOME SCHOOL OR TOWN. YOU BAN A BOOK, IT GETS THE PUBLICITY. THE HOLOCAUST BOOK, MOUSE, THOSE SALES SOARED AFTER A SCHOOL BOARD IN TENNESSEE RECENTLY BANNED IT FOR VIOLENCE AND LANGUAGE. ONE OF THE TOP SELLING GRAPHIC NOVELS IN THE COUNTRY 40 YEARS AFTER IT WAS FIRST PUBLISHED. SO WHY DON'T WE TALK FOR A SECOND ABOUT BANNING BOOKS IN OUR PUBLIC SPACES. LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU WANT TO KNOW ABOUT THIS TOPIC. WHAT IS THE LOCAL NEWS MISSED AS WE DISCUSS IT? WHAT MAKES YOU CURIOUS ABOUT THIS ISSUE? E-MAIL ME AT DAN@WRAL.COM. THE COUNTY LIBRARY LEADERSHIP AGREED SAYING IT WAS, "EXPLICIT ILLUSTRATIONS THAT DON'T ALIGN WITH THEIR SELECTION POLICY." AND THEN SOME LIBRARIANS GOT INVOLVED AND SPOKE OUT AGAINST THE BAN. &gt;&gt; WE'RE A LIBRARY. WE'RE NOT SUPPOSE TO BE ABOUT CENSORING OTHER VOICES. THAT'S NOT WHAT WE STAND FOR. &gt;&gt; THE LIBRARY BIG WIGS CHANGED THEIR MINDS. THEY DECIDED TO LET THIS BOOK STAY ON THE SHELVES AND OFTEN TO REWORK THEIR POLICIES WITH DEALING WITH COMPLAINTS INSTEAD. ALSO LITTLE CONCERN THAT IT MIGHT BE UNCONSTITUTIONAL. AFTER ALL THE SUPREME COURT RULED ON THIS SORT OF THING IN THE MID-80s WHEN A SCHOOL BOARD IN NEW YORK TRIED TO BAN BOOKS AND STUDENTS ARGUED IT SUPPRESSED THE FIRST AMENDMENT AND THE COURTS AGREED WITH THE STUDENTS KIND OF. THEY DON'T GIVE US THE CLEAREST ANSWERS ON THE DENSE TOPICS. WHEN I DON'T GET ONE I CAN'T QUITE UNDERSTAND, I TURN TO AN EXPERT. &gt;&gt; THE COURT SEEMS TO HAVE MADE A DISTINCTION BETWEEN NOT PURCHASING A BOOK AND PUTTING IT ON THE SHELVES AND THEN TAKING IT DOWN FOR REASONS AFTER IT IS UP ON THE SHELF. WHETHER THAT'S THE CLEAREST POSSIBLE DISTINCTION, I THINK A LOT OF US MIGHT ARGUMENT IT'S NOT, BUT I THINK THEY'RE CONCERNED WITH THE MESSAGE IT TAKES PLACE WHEN YOU ACTUALLY REMOVE A BOOK IN A DIFFERENT WAY IF YOU DON'T PURCHASE THAT BOOK OR ADD IT TO THE SHELVES IN THE FIRST PLACE. &gt;&gt; RIGHT, SO MESSAGING MATTERS, WE KNOW THAT. BUT I DO WANT TO GET THIS RIGHT. SO IF YOU DISPLAY A BOOK AT THE LIBRARY AND THEN YOU CHANGE YOUR MIND AND YOU TAKE IT OFF THE SHELVES, THAT'S CENSORSHIP. IF YOU DECIDE TO NEVER DISPLAY IT IN THE FIRST PLACE THAT'S NOT, RIGHT? THAT'S KIND OF TOUGH TO WRAP YOUR HEAD AROUND. I E-MAILED WAKE COUNTY AND ASKED AMONG OTHER THINGS WHO DECIDES HOW MANY TITLES TO ADD? HOW DO YOU DECIDE? DO SOME CATEGORIES GET PRIORITIZED? CONSIDERING THE NON-FICTION SECTION BEFORE CHOOSING A NEW ROMANCE NOVEL. ARE THERE ROMANCE NOVELS? A FEW HOURS LATER I DID HEAR BACK AND THE COUNTY SAID HEY DAN, THANKS FOR THE INQUIRY. BOOK SELECTION IS AN INCREDIBLY FASCINATING AND CHALLENGING UNDERTAKING, TELLING ME THEY WOULD GIVE YOU MORE DETAILS, A LITTLE BIT FURTHER DOWN THE LINE TO CONTINUE TO TALK TO YOU ABOUT THESE TOPICS. ARE YOU EXCITED TO FIND OUT WHAT THEY SAY AS I AM? MAYBE NOT. BY THE WAY THE LIBRARIES DO HAVE ROMANCE NOVELS, A FEW THOUSAND OF THEM ACTUALLY. AND 50 SHADES OF GRAY. I'm meteorologist K Campbell in the wr a severe weather center. Another day of above normal temperatures as highs climbed into the low to mid eighties. The big difference, the humidity, I am sure you noticed it outside. It's feeling more humid. Dew points were in the upper sixties throughout much of the day. We're going to be in that humid category on the muggy meter through Wednesday and then perhaps actually climbing a bit Thursday ahead of a cold front before we see a huge crash, how humid it feels outside by the time we get to the weekend. So some good news there, the humidity, it's not going to last all the way through the summer. We've got a spring like break ahead for the weekend, but it's feeling like summer during the week. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, highs are in the upper eighties to lower nineties with the high humidity and each day does come with a chance for some scattered thunderstorms. So let's talk about that chance. It looks like Tuesday. It's actually early in the morning that we may have the best chance of storms, very icy activity during the afternoon and then perhaps a brief uptick later in the evening. Once we get to Wednesday, this model in particular tends to be overdone two days in advance. But you get the point, some scattered storms develop late in the day. And then Thursday, we don't yet have a high resolution model of data available for. But given that we have this approaching cold front to help lift the air that provides the mechanism of the mechanism for storms to form in the first place. And then it's going to be so hot, so humid that we've got plenty of energy for those storms to strengthen and perhaps become severe. So we're thinking it'll be a bit more widespread. Thursday. There is a level one out of five threat for severe weather, Tuesday and Wednesday. So a low threat and then Thursday, we don't yet have which risk level will be under determined. However, we're in the area already highlighted to be placed under some kind of risk for Thursday forecast rainfall over the next five days, about half an inch to an inch of rain will be possible. Watering forecasts, you can see we've got a chance of storms in through Friday and then I think will be dry during the day. Saturday. There is a small chance of a shower thunderstorm this Saturday night into Sunday morning for Mother's Day. So of course, we'll keep an eye on that for you as you plan ahead for Mother's Day weekend during the week. It's feeling like summer, hot, humid storm chances each day. We've got changes in store for the weekend and lows could dip back down to 50 by Saturday morning.
