ZEBULON, N.C. — Wake County Sheriff Gerald Baker is commending a group of deputies for not responding with gunfire when they were shot at Sunday night.

According to the Wake County Sheriff's Office, three men fired at deputies after 8 p.m. close to the Woods Plantation subdivision in Zebulon in a wooded area near Rosinburg Road and Shepard School Road.

The deputies approached the men after hearing the shots and asked several times for the gunmen to disengage. When the men did not stop firing, the deputies realized they were being targeted.

Baker said the deputies did not fire back because of limited visibility.

"I commend those officers....I think they did a great job showing great restraint...when they had rounds being fired over them in the darkness of night," Baker said.

A perimeter was set up in the area on Sunday as authorities searched for the men. Shell casings from pistols and rifles were located at the scene.

Searches will resume Monday using thermal tracking technology. Zebulon police and the N.C. State Highway Patrol have joined the investigation.

Neighbors told WRAL News it wasn't the first time shots were fired in the neighborhood. One man said a bullet entered his home one night.
