DURHAM, N.C. — One person was sent to a hospital overnight after a shootout on the Durham Freeway.

Officers were dispatched to a shooting and vehicle crash near the Briggs Avenue exit off N.C. Highway 147 after 12:30 a.m. When they arrived, they found a Chevrolet Malibu in flames and three men near the side of the road.

Police said the men told officers they had just turned on to N.C. 147 South when they noticed a vehicle following them. Numerous shots were fired into the Malibu, causing the driver to lose control and crash into a guardrail.

A passenger in the back seat suffered a gunshot wound and was taken to a local hospital for treatment of injuries that police said didn't appear to life-threatening. Another occupant of the Malibu was taken for treatment of leg injuries suffered in the crash. The third occupant wasn't injured.

No charges have been filed in the case.

Durham police closed the southbound lanes for two hours while they gathered evidence.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 919-683-1200.
