DURHAM, N.C. — The search continues for a gunman in a shooting forced rush-hour traffic down to one lane for southbound U.S. Highway 15/501 on Thursday afternoon. The shooting happened between the Cornwallis and Durham Chapel-Hill Boulevard split.

A man was taken to a local hospital for treatment of serious injuries, police said.

"We're going to continue to see what we're seeing, and today, was right here on Ward Three. Right here by my house [and] by my restaurant, and I'm a city councilman," said Leonardo Williams, who owns a restaurant two miles from where Thursday's shooting happened.

Williams said crime has always been a problem, and now, it's happening more often.

"Crime is bad, but I don't want us to get distracted on how important it is for us to keep our focus on the youth — engaging them. We have to love hard on our youth, love hard on the community and embrace them and make they are are occupied with their time," said Williams.

Williams said community leaders need to target the youth by providing affordable housing, job opportunities and emotional support.

"We need people to work. We need folks to get distracted from just sitting at home and engaging negatively with one another," he said. "There are 12-year-olds that are carrying guns,"

Durham police did not provide any additional details about a motive or suspect in the case.
