Sheriff: Person tortured in basement after NC kidnapping

On Monday, deputies responded to a home in the East Fork community, where someone showed up at a home stating they had been kidnapped.

The person had numerous cuts on the face, body and arms and "multiple cross symbols that had been carved onto the victim’s face and body," Harwood said.

The person, who was not identified, was transported to a local hospital.

Detectives and deputies found a home nearby where evidence showed the torturing occurred.

A search warrant was used to search the home, and deputies arrested three people.

Patrick Colby Banks was charged with assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious bodily injury with intent to kill, first-degree kidnapping, possession of a weapon of mass destruction and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. According to Harwood, Banks was wanted for parole violation and had a felony warrant for his arrest for cutting off a probation electronic monitoring device.

James Angel and Nicole Sawyer were each charged with assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious bodily injury with intent to kill, first-degree kidnapping and possession of a weapon of mass destruction.

Detectives learned "the victim had been forcibly imprisoned in a basement" at the home, according to Harwood.

Harwood said the victim’s hands and feet had been tied with barb wire and the victim’s chest was tied with barb wire to a beam of the home. The victim's mouth was taped shut, and he or she had been punched and kicked in the head, struck multiple times in the head by multiple firearms, struck multiple times with a crowbar and sliced by multiple knives, including on the face and hands.

Harwood said more information would be released at a later date.
