GREENVILLE, N.C. — A man was arrested earlier this month after deputies say he fought with firefighters.

According to the Pitt County Sheriff's Office, firefighters responded to a fire on Sept. 9 around 11:30 p.m. when the homeowner, Desmond Monte Spencer, 40, "entered the home and began to fight with and assault the firefighters working inside."

Officials said a deputy and a state trooper entered the smoke-filled home and used a Taser to try to control Spencer. No one was injured during the encounter.

Spencer was transported to the Pitt County Detention Center and charged with five counts of assault on a government official.

Spencer remains in custody under a $35,000 secured bond.
