WILMINGTON, N.C. — A North Carolina man robbed a dollar store on Saturday afternoon — but returned the cash after having a change of heart, according to the New Hanover County Sheriff's Office.

Richard William Dunn, 63, is charged with armed robbery after the sheriff's office says he demanded cash from a clerk at a Family Dollar on Castle Hayne Road.

The Raleigh Police Department said he worked as an officer from 1983 to 2003.

The sheriff's office said in a Facebook post that he returned to the dollar store shortly after leaving, and told the clerk, "I can't do this." He handed the clerk back all the cash he had stolen.

Deputies caught Dunn leaving the store and he was arrested. He was being held at the New Hanover County Detention Facility on a $75,000 bond.

WRAL News reached out to the New Hanover County Sheriff's Office to see how much cash was stolen. Lieutenant J.J. Brewer said that for security reasons, the sheriff's office does not publicly release how much cash is stolen during an armed robbery.
