FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — City sanitation workers clearing a Fayetteville garage found an artillery shell Monday. On Tuesday, police said the shell was not active.

The home, in the 800 block of Montclair Drive, had been occupied by a soldier until recently.

Workers were on the scene to remove mercury found in sealed beakers in the garage. When they discovered the shell, they called police, who asked specialists from Fort Bragg to remove the ordnance.
