RALEIGH, N.C. — Shaw University officials announced on Saturday that the school would be forgiving $1 million of summer school costs for 400 students.

A press release said that officials are using federal stimulus to fund this effort.

"When we sent students home at the beginning of the pandemic, we provided them with technology and internet access as needed along with 24/7 online healthcare," university officials said in a release. "Even with our concentrated efforts, some students suffered academically."

Shaw University plans to bring students back on campus in the fall for as much of a "normal" college experience as possible.

"Even though COVID-19 disproportionately affected our community, we remain committed to the success of each student," officials said.
