RALEIGH, N.C. — Shaw University is inviting the public to tour its campus Monday as it works on redevelopment plans that will impact historic downtown Raleigh.
The university is in a high-traffic area and owns a lot of land in downtown Raleigh.

University leaders on Monday will outline their vision for the Shaw U District plan, a rezoning plan that includes new residence halls, a student center and other facilities.

The changes are coming to the private liberal arts institution as the university says it’s a challenge recruiting students, faculty and staff.

University officials believe leasing land to developers could help generate revenue to pay for the new plan.

"This is an opportunity for us to drive revenue that doesn't affect students. This is all part of using our land and leveraging it for the betterment of the university and the students," said Kevin Sullivan, Shaw's vice president of real estate and strategic development.

While some residents said they welcome the change, others, like Carmen Cauthen, with family ties to the Historically Black Colleges and Universities, worry about it losing its character.

"I always have a concern that Black history is going to get lost. I want to be sure that doesn't happen," said Cauthen.

The event begins at 6 p.m. with a tour of campus.
