Responding to viral online allegations, Arizona election officials say the use of Sharpie pens at polling stations was planned, and won't invalidate ballots.

all of these votes are very important with the tight races here in Arizona. Here's a look inside of what's happening at the tabulation center where we are today. This is where teams of adjudicators air combing over ballots. The county says there are teams of two and they're from different parties the adjudicators air looking for things like writing on ballots or exes instead of filled in bubbles that the county says the equipment cannot read. Well. Signature verification and ballot processing are also happening. At the same time, Maricopa County's Erika Flores says she's also been getting questions about the sharpies used at the polls. Flores tells us they tested different kinds of pens and shows the fine tipped sharpies because they needed the fastest Drying Inc for the tabulation machines, Flores adds, The bleed through of the pens on the ballots is not a problem. That's not a concern because we have new tabulation equipment that Onley reads the ovals and we have offset columns on the ballot. So even with that bleed through, it's not filling in any other oval. On the other side, there are some dates and times you're going to want to watch out for starting with 7 p.m. This evening. That's when Maricopa County says they will release MAWR unofficial results, and they'll do that each evening around seven PM until every valid ballot is counted. For now, we're in Phoenix.
