BURLINGTON, N.C. — U.S. marshals on Friday arrested a registered sex offender who had been on the run from a rape charge in Burlington for more than two years.

Burlington police named Brian Lee Abundis, 36, as a suspect the same day that the victim reported a sexual assault in the 1300 block of Ava Street on Nov. 10, 2008. Abundis was charged with first-degree rape and first-degree kidnapping but had evaded arrest.

Marshals said they caught him Friday at 1134 Bass St. in Madison in Rockingham County. He was placed in the Alamance County jail under a $135,000 secured bond.

Abundis also faces charges in Forsyth County of failure to register as a sex offender and two counts of failure to appear in court. The Sex Offender Registry notes that he hadn't verified his address since 2006.

Abundis was convicted in 1999 of felony taking indecent liberties with a minor in Forsyth County, according to state Department of Correction records. He was sentenced to three years' probation.
