The owner-operator of the truck said he had just checked all of his tires at a fuel stop in southern Virginia, but heard what sounded like an explosion behind him before the fire erupted.
The driver, who did not give his name to WRAL News, was concerned about his clients more than for his own loss of livelihood.
"I don't know how I'm going to tell my clients," he said. "One of them was very nervous about putting his brand new sports car on the truck but I assured him that all would be fine."
That man's car was turned to ashes.
The truck driver was the sole owner of the trucking company.
He was shaken up but otherwise uninjured.
