OCEAN ISLE BEACH, N.C. — About a dozen people were rushed for treatment to a local hospital after a set of stairs to an elevated beach house collapsed Monday, authorities said.

According to neighbors, around 13 people were standing on a set of stairs at the home, located in the 100 block of Ocean Isle West Blvd., about 1:30 p.m. when the structure gave way. Some victims were airlifted to a local hospital while others were transported for medical care by an ambulance.

The group of people were taking a photo when the stairs collapsed, according to town officials.

The conditions of the victims and the nature of their injuries were pending.

Town Administrator Daisy Ivy said Monday afternoon that she had not heard of any fatalities.

WECT-TV reported that the home was built around 25 years ago and the stairs may have been deficient when they were put in place at the private home.

After the mishap, yellow caution tape was erected around the porch of the elevated pink house, which sits on stilts.

During that incident, the victims were taking a family picture when the deck buckled and gave way.
