Several cars involved in crash on I-40 East in Durham, traffic backed up for miles

A crash has closed the right lane of Interstate 40 in Durham near Exit 273, or the exit to N.C. Highway 54.

DURHAM, N.C. — A crash closed part of Interstate 40 Eastbound on Saturday afternoon in Durham near Exit 273, or the exit to N.C. Highway 54.

Officials said drivers should expect delays if they are passing through the area. Multiple wrecks were spotted on I-40 East, according to witnesses, and traffic was backed up for miles.

Witnesses sent WRAL News video that showed at least six cars were involved in one of the crashes, possibly more. Video also showed a tractor-trailer with damage.

According to traffic data, side roads in the area were also congested, including Farrington Road.

A flood advisory is in effect for Durham and Wake counties. Roads could be wet and slippery in some areas and flooding is possible.
