The North Carolina Department of Transportation said Monday thousands of drivers who lost their licenses because of failure to pay fines may be able to get them back soon.

Over the next 60 days, the North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles said it will be contacting more than 185,000 drivers whose licenses were revoked for their failure to pay fines, penalties and court costs.

Drivers who failed to pay simply because they could not afford the amount due can apply to get their license reinstated using Form AOC-CR-415.

Drivers can request the form from NC DMV and get it mailed to them for free.

The changes come as part of a settlement of a class-action lawsuit filed in May 2018 in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of North Carolina in Greensboro. The Southern Coalition for Social Justice, the American Civil Liberties Union of North Carolina Legal Foundation, the American Civil Liberties Union Foundation and the Southern Poverty Law Center filed the suit.

The NCDMV has also revised the official notice it will send to drivers who will face future license revocations for failure to pay court debt, advising drivers of the statute.
