MORRISVILLE, N.C. — Airline employees at Raleigh-Durham International Airport confirmed a system-wide outage that impacted travel across the country on Friday morning. Service has since been restored.

At RDU, major lines of travelers flying through American Airlines were seen wrapping around the concourse around 5 a.m. Some reported being unable to make reservations on the AA website.

An American Airlines representative provided a statement to WRAL: "Earlier today, Sabre had a technical issue that impacted multiple carriers, including American. This technical issue has been resolved. We apologize to our customers for the inconvenience."

Alaska Airlines also reported problems due to Sabre going down. Sabre is a software company that services the travel industry.

Some flights were delayed. The outage came as passenger traffic increased by 1,415% compared to April 2020. More than 606,000 passengers flew through RDU last month.

"There’s a lot of people in line," said Ray Wickham, who was traveling to Saint Martin. "We were like number two in line. We were like really early. There are a lot of people here now. They’re trying to do the best that they can.

Photos and videos of long lines of travelers were posted on Twitter in different parts of the country such as Atlanta, Boston, Charlotte and Baltimore.

WRAL is working to learn more about this story.
