I-540 reopens after crash at I-87 in Wake County

All eastbound lanes of Interstate 540 reopened Tuesday afternoon after a tractor-trailer crashed and flipped on its side at Interstate 87, snarling travel plans for motorists trying to get out of town for the July 4 holiday.

The road reopened around 4 p.m., according to authorities. Traffic was delayed until around 5:30 p.m.

During the incident, the truck lost its load and spilled an unknown material on the roadway.

Based on aerial pictures from the scene, it appears as if the material could be glass or gravel.
