One killed, three children seriously injured in crash on I-40 near Cary Towne Boulevard

One person was killed after being thrown from a car in a crash on Interstate 40 near Cary Towne Boulevard Thursday afternoon.

CARY, N.C. — One person was killed after being thrown from a car in a crash on Interstate 40 near Cary Towne Boulevard Thursday afternoon. Three other adults and three children were in "serious" condition after being hurt in the crash.

However, a family member said the person killed in the crash was a 14-year-old boy. The boy was originally from Honduras and was in Raleigh visiting family for the summer, the family member said.

Authorities said that the crash only involved one vehicle. Sky 5 video the scene showed an SUV overturned in a ditch along the side of I-40.

At around 12 p.m., dozens of firefighters were working to stabilize the vehicle. Crews were able to pull at least one person pinned inside the vehicle onto a stretcher. That person was placed inside an ambulance and rushed away, according to Sky5 video from the scene.

North Carolina Department of Transportation officials announced the closure at around 11 a.m. The road was closed for several hours as police investigated.

A serious crash closed all eastbound lanes of Interstate 40 near Cary Towne Boulevard on Thursday afternoon.

According to the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration, almost 10,000 people in the U,S. have died in crashes, which is a 7% increase from 2021.

550 of those crashes have been in N.C.
