SELMA, N.C. — Friends and family gathered Monday evening to mourn the death of a 19-year-old, shot in Selma. Malik Shepherd was well-known as a high school football player and graduate of Smithfield-Selma High School.

He was shot and killed around 11 p.m. in a neighborhood near West Preston and Green streets on Saturday night. Tyquan Dublin, 21, was also shot and received serious injuries, police said.

Shepherd's mother, Imika Barnes, said he was packed and ready to begin classes at Barton College.

"He was supposed to leave. He was anxious to go," she said.

Shepherd's mother says her son was a good kid and was at the wrong place at the wrong time.

"He was just talking about his classes and what his future was going to be like and all he wanted to do. He went outside, and that’s the last I seen of my baby," she said.

She said some of his friends were known gang members, but he was not.

"He was friends with everybody, whether they were in gangs, whatever they do. He's not a person that valued what they do. He valued what they are," Barnes said.

Detective William Baker said Shepherd was a starting quarterback at SSHS before he graduated in 2018.
