Second man questioned in Cumberland death

Cumberland County sheriff’s detectives were questioning a second man in connection with the Oct. 4 murder of Clarence Bauer, 79, of Fayetteville.

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Cumberland County sheriff’s detectives were questioning a second man in connection with the Oct. 4 murder of Clarence Bauer, 79, of Fayetteville.

Investigators planned to talk with Paul Mitchell Edge, 47, of Parkton. His connection to the case was unknown.

A friend visiting Bauer's home at 348 Star Lane found his body and discovered that Bauer's 2004 white Ford Focus was missing.

A state Medical Examiner's report confirmed that Bauer was murdered. Authorities have not disclosed how he died.

Detectives said they have spoken with another man in connection with the killing.

Charles Michael Gainey II, 34, of Fayetteville, surrendered to law enforcement officials for questioning, and detectives later released him.

Authorities have not disclosed any other details about the case.
