Second man arrested in Durham bank robbery, shooting

Larry Lamar Johnson, 29, was being held Friday at the Durham County Jail on a $300,000 bond after he turned himself in, authorities said. He has been charged with conspiracy robbery with a dangerous weapon and robbery with a dangerous weapon, according to jail records.

Johnson was expected to be in court this morning for a first-appearance hearing.

Javon Cheek, 24, of Durham, has been charged with robbery with a dangerous weapon, conspiracy to commit robbery with a dangerous weapon, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury.

The employee was taken to an area hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries, police said. The employee told WRAL News that he was recovering at home Thursday night.

“We have blood everywhere,” a 911 caller can be heard telling a dispatcher following the incident.

According to police at the scene, the robber entered the bank and demanded money before shooting the employee.

“He just walked up and cut the lady in line and said, ‘You need to take my deposit.’ And I said, ‘I’m closed,’ and he walked back and cut the lady again, and he pulled a gun out and said, ‘Hurry up, hurry up,’” the 911 caller says.

The 911 caller, who appears to be a bank employee, said she jumped behind the counter when the man took out the gun. She said she didn’t believe a lot of money was taken, and the money was not marked so authorities could track it.

“It just happened so fast,” she said.

Susan Barham was in the drive-thru lane at the bank Wednesday afternoon, unaware that the bank was being robbed as she waited.

"I was slightly terrified," she said. "The gentleman that was shot was actually my teller."

Barham, though, didn't know what was happening at the time. She said it wasn't unusual for her to experience some type of delay in the drive-thru.

"I don't know how much time passed, maybe five to 10 minutes, and he came back and he seemed like he was anxious," she said of the teller.

Barham said she learned later that witnesses told police the robber would have had to walk near her vehicle as he left the bank.

Barham said she regularly banks at the impacted branch and know most of the employees very well.

"I'm concerned this is going to keep him from being able to go back to his job. He's a great guy and does his job very well," she said.

Cheek was being held Thursday night at the Durham County Jail under $500,000 bond. Authorities also served him with an outstanding warrant for being a sex offender and failing to report his new address.
