Second chance believer: Convenience store manager wins $1 million lottery
Malek Dabwan, a convenience store clerk from Goldsboro, has won the $1 million prize from the North Carolina Education Lottery.
Posted — UpdatedIt's a phrase many people have dreamed of saying. For one Goldsboro man, this dream has come true.
"I've got a surprise for you."
However, when he walked through the doors of the Greenville Claim Center, the representative that greeted him said, "I've got a surprise for you. You just won $1 million!"
The lottery staff cheered as Dabwan gave his mom a big hug.
“Nothing like this has ever happened to me," said Dabwan.
Dabwan had the choice of taking a $1 million annuity that has 20 payments of $50,000 a year or a lump sum of $600,000. He chose the lump sum. After federal and state tax withholdings, he took home $424,500.
In addition to the $1 million prize, four other people won $10,000 and 50 people won $200 in the drawing. The new $30 ticket launched in April, and ticket sales have raised more than $700 million a year for North Carolina education.
A second-chance believer
Dabwan, a convenience store manager, has exciting plans for his winnings. After his entry was chosen from over 600,000, he plans to use the money to purchase a new home.
The lucky winner says he put his entries in a few months ago, and then forgot all about them. "I never thought anything would come out of it, but it did," he said. "I’m a second-chance believer now.”
