GOLDSBORO, N.C. — "I'm a millionaire!"

It's a phrase many people have dreamed of saying. For one Goldsboro man, this dream has come true.

When Malek Dabwan got a phone call from the NC Education Lottery, he thought it was a robocall at first. When the lottery representative told him he'd won a prize, Dabwan still believed it may have only been a small amount.

"I've got a surprise for you."

However, when he walked through the doors of the Greenville Claim Center, the representative that greeted him said, "I've got a surprise for you. You just won $1 million!"

The lottery staff cheered as Dabwan gave his mom a big hug.

“Nothing like this has ever happened to me," said Dabwan.

Dabwan had the choice of taking a $1 million annuity that has 20 payments of $50,000 a year or a lump sum of $600,000. He chose the lump sum. After federal and state tax withholdings, he took home $424,500.

In addition to the $1 million prize, four other people won $10,000 and 50 people won $200 in the drawing. The new $30 ticket launched in April, and ticket sales have raised more than $700 million a year for North Carolina education.

A second-chance believer

Dabwan, a convenience store manager, has exciting plans for his winnings. After his entry was chosen from over 600,000, he plans to use the money to purchase a new home.

The lucky winner says he put his entries in a few months ago, and then forgot all about them. "I never thought anything would come out of it, but it did," he said. "I’m a second-chance believer now.”
