Even today, pieces of the Piggly Wiggly are hidden in plain sight around the modern, local store - which is affectionately named NoFo at The Pig, in honor of its history. Exploring the modern-day space is almost like a scavenger hunt for relics from the store's past.

Hey everybody, this is Wrl? S Hidden historian heather leah and today I am at the Old Piggly Wiggly. So today you've probably even spent time here. Um and you may even know about the history of this building, but we're going to take a tour and look at some of the artifacts that they've saved Now. Right now the Old Piggly Wiggly is known as no phone at the pig and I know personally for a long time I had eaten brunch here on the weekends. I did not realize that the pig part of the name, no phone at the pig actually refers to what the building used to be, which was the Piggly Wiggly. Now the Piggly Wiggly opened here in the 19 fifties and this is just a wonderful example of a local business that saved the history of the building that was here before. Um While no foe has its own distinct culture and its own distinct food and flavors and it's a very amazing part of Raleigh's a local business. The owner did her best to really save the soul of the Piggly Wiggly that was here before people, especially people who lived in the five points area of Raleigh would have used this Piggly Wiggly and I'm gonna go ahead and turn things around so you can actually look at what I'm looking at instead of my face. Here we go, they would have used the Piggly Wiggly as the community grocery store and she has saved several remnants of the Piggly Wiggly, even if you've shocked here, You may not have noticed them. So we're gonna walk around there's a lot of the original um Piggly Wiggly here today. So first of all we're gonna look at the mural because this gives us an idea of what it looked like in here before when it was a community grocery store. Again, the owner of No foe at the Pig used to shop at this Piggly Wiggly and she remembers the people here in the service here and she had this mural commissioned based on an old black and white photo and we'll look at the original photo as well and she said you can look here and how people were added to the photo for the to put life into the um mural here and she said people young and older here, we have a woman here buying bananas and these people, some of the people here were actual employees of the Piggly Wiggly that they put into the mural kind of to immortalize them, but it really gives you a sense of Small town Raleigh in the five points community. She remembers living here And the five points community back when the Piggly Wiggly was still here and she said you really would just, you live in this area and you would walk to the Piggly Wiggly and get your groceries. In fact, she told me, I'm I don't remember this. Um it's kind of amazing for me to hear it. I didn't know this, but you wouldn't even necessarily pay for your groceries, you would charge and you would pay at the end of the month. Um, so they just kind of trusted you to come in and buy your groceries and charge and then come back and pay them later. Um, and it was very much a community place and I just wanted to take this in. She did say, uh, the artists put in a little pig running from the butcher. The butcher, I believe it's probably back here. Um, and you can even see the original, um, kind of the isles and the food aisles that you would see here at the pig. So, this just gives you an idea of what it looked like. Now we're gonna look at some of the remnants now, um, they are not serving food downstairs today, which is why I'm able to be here and kinda show you some of this stuff. She did have these commissioned as well. She even named it no foe at the pig. So back in those days, they would simply say they're going to go to the pig. So now today it's no phone at the pig. And she gave me a handy list of the artifacts that they saved. And we're going to take a look at them because you could have shopped here a million times and maybe not even noticed. Here's one right here above us. Actually let's start up here. So I'm downstairs. Uh, now the pig would have not had this downstairs space open. This would have been storage. So she did open up the space so that they would have room for more. But you can even see from down here up there, it says delicatessen if you were eating down here and just thought this was a, you know, a restaurant with a quirky store and lots of really cool local art. Um you might wonder why there's a grocery store sign up there on the wall and it's it's original to the pig. And she actually did save photos. So you can see people who worked at the Piggly Wiggly. This is when I actually missed and the glare is bad. So I'm gonna try and get a better angle on it, but you can actually see what it looked like. Oh they put great pains into creating this area, their bar area and if you look, you'll see, Well thank you Katie. Um you'll see that they actually made the bar out of Piggly Wiggly cans. She told me she loved the pig and she really wanted to save as much as she could. Um really a wonderful model. I feel for a local store, a local business to try and save the history of what was there before and what it meant to the community. So you can actually come here and see some of the original Piggly Wiggly brand. Uh we got some peas and sliced carrots, stewed tomatoes, mixed vegetables and you can even see the brand on there. It's just something that If you shopped here in the 50s and 60s, you may not have seen a can that looks like this for a long time, but you can come here and see it and kind of get a flashback um and remember those days look cut beets, everyone's favorite. Um And she has won the no foe uh no food at the pig which is here today has won many awards um because that same sense of community um of her saving some of this old Piggly wiggly stuff really goes into the store today and we'll look upstairs in a minute. But she works with local artists, local artisans, local food makers to make sure that when you shop here you're getting stuff made in Raleigh or made in north Carolina. No phone. Okay, that's a good question. Alan I'm gonna answer that. Give me just a second. Here's another picture they have here um of the Piggly Wiggly sign. So she did give me a cheat sheet to help me. Um No foe is actually um from the first store. The first door she opened was in Wilmington's own um her no foe. And it's it was in a historic building as well and it was north, it was on north fourth street, North fourth street. So it was stumped put together to be no foe. North fourth and here in Raleigh. It's no phone at the pig because of it's in the Piggly Wiggly, you can see she even saved the sign from the Piggly Wiggly, you can even see that it's faded because it's it's it's old. Um but she saved it and it's sitting right here. She's got a photo here of the Piggly Wiggly how it looked before. It was no foe. Where is this? So we are in the Five Points neighborhood on Glenwood Avenue and again the light is a little garish. Let me see if I can get closer and show you guys. So this, this is what the mural was based on but she's even got this picture showing you what the Piggly Wiggly looked like, what it was like at the pig. So you don't forget, it is I believe a very smart model of making sure that yeah, you start a new business but you, you give honor to the business that was there before and make sure it's not forgotten up here, we're gonna go upstairs in just a minute but I wanted to show you. So this right here not the, not the actual chandelier uh that was commissioned, that's very cute. Um but this metal circle around the chandelier that was actually in the original pig. Now I am not an engineer or an architect. Um Do you believe? I'm not sure what that's called, but it was part of the original Pig and we can actually see it in the pictures over here. Look you can see it in the original store on their ceiling still there today. She saved really whatever she could. Now we're gonna go upstairs because she actually used some of the original coolers from the pig. Um Again the Piggly Wiggly to um oh and here's here's a great picture of what it would have looked like at the time and you can step outside today and see no foe and really see the Piggly Wiggly still in it. We're gonna peek upstairs at some of the remnants that she saved up here. She kept as many artifacts as she could. So there are a few things up here. First of all again, you can look up and same as from the pictures that we saw downstairs. You see frozen foods. So you can look at the photos of how the store looked and then look up here and see the grocery aisles still marked still marked today. You can see the grocery sign frozen foods and you can see they tried to do a layout of their store kind of in line with what the grocery aisles said. We actually do have a cold case here. She also saved carts from the original store and we will look at those as well now on top of the fact that they have saved a lot from the original Piggly Wiggly. This is a cool store in itself. Again, lots of local art, local artisans, local food. This, I had never noticed this. Now I've come to this area a million times shopping. Looking at the cute little stuffed animals and didn't realize that they're in one of the original cases, looks like they had and you can and she left the original barcodes in the case so you can come here and see, you know, you could buy this cute little stuffed animal and then it's nibblers, corn or birdseye, cob corn, birdseye, baby broccoli. Here you want some bird's eye, baby broccoli, it's marked. So again, if you were to come here and not know, it would be very easy to see that and not really understand why that's there, but that's part of the beauty of the stores. They've saved these pieces of history. Now we're going to take a look outside because they saved some stuff out there too. Let's see again, you can see now. She told me not to be tempted to look at this sign over here, but I want to look at it. This is not from the pig that was here. Um She bought this from Another Piggly Wiggly but still saving the history and making sure that it's remembered. I thought it was worth looking at because it's still, it's still vintage. Now we're gonna take a look out here. This isn't part of the original pig, but I think it's cute. Okay, so here, she actually has the original clock from the pig from back when it was the Piggly Wiggly. Um and it looks like they've built something around the clock, but this is the clock probably, I believe we saw this in the picture and it might even be in the mural. Yes, yes. Um you know Piggly Wiggly? Um It's it's gone from this part of Raleigh and it's a story that so many people have memories of shopping. I mean look at this now, she told me again, she grew up in this area, so this stretch And we're here at five points. This was like she said, the small little main street of five points, she says, talking about mixed use communities. This was the original mixed use community. There are neighborhoods and you would walk from the neighborhood and come down to this area, you'd have the Piggly Wiggly go shopping at the pig. And they also had um oh, a little automotive shop, they had a hardware store, they pretty much had anything that you needed right here within walking distance. So this is really a harkening back to an older, older Raleigh yesteryear in Raleigh and she saved as much as she could because she remembered she remembers living here, I'm going to show you this as well. Again, something that I wasn't aware of, I had never noticed, but she saved grocery carts from the pig. Now she said in the spring, they tend to look a lot more um you know, beautiful, they're they're going to be in bloom and have more growing, but I still wanted to show you the carts that you could walk in here. My grandmother could walk in here and still recognize the place, which is, it's rare. It's rare to find that today to walk in somewhere and still be able to recognize what it used to be and what it used to mean to the community. And so here we are outside the pig, you can see no foe up there on the roof. And she told me the history of this part of Raleigh dating all the way back to the early 1900s. Um I actually didn't know this. I thought it was called five points because of the five streets coming together. She said it was actually the five uh neighborhoods that were in this area and that's why it was called five points. The owner is doing well. Um, I just spoke with her today and she told me all these stories and she told me how passionate she is about keeping this part of Raleigh history alive. So you can still come here and you can still see the original, the original pig. But she told me about the history of this street dating all the way back to the 1900s. Um and that this area was built around. If you've seen any other hidden history, you may know this area was built around um was built around the trolley system. So we had a trolley that went down Glenwood Avenue and it went all the way out to bloomsbury park which was a amusement park that is no longer there today. It had rides, It was built in the early 19 hundreds like the 19 teens and they had rides, they had a carousel and they had a roller coaster that you could ride hard to imagine today. But remnants of bloomsbury park are still there. So we're gonna go back downstairs and I'm going to show the mural one more time and we will talk about the history of this area. And again you can see they really kept the original spirit of the place and she says that the store no foe on top of trying to, here's another case on top of trying to preserve the history of what was here before. She tries to support local artists and they have white chocolate deviled eggs, that looks really good. Um And you can see when you come in here like saving the history but also having a very interesting, quirky community store that's still here today where you can enjoy it is but also remember what it was. So again, we'll go back and take a look at the mirror one more time. So whether or not you've ever visited no foe at the pig. I have eaten here a few times and done some shopping here, but even I didn't realize that it used to be the Piggly Wiggly and that there was so much here that is a reminder of that time, there's the clock and it says tiptop Foods because when it was originally opened, the owner of the Pig opened a tiptop foods in the early fifties. And by the late fifties it had become the Piggly Wiggly and you can see just a tiny sliver there of that metal circle that she has saved up there and added a little bit of life too. Some of you watching may have already known some of this, but not had noticed all of these artifacts still here. It is history from the 1950s. The Piggly Wiggly did close when they closed here, she says it broke the heart of a lot of the community who had many good memories of coming here and again, she said the people that worked here, they knew you by name, they knew your family. They it was a very community based grocery store and again you didn't even have to pay for your groceries right away. You could just come in and take what you needed and pay later. This was just part of the community of Raleigh at the time and you can step back in time and remember some of that time period in Raleigh, that era in Raleigh. I'm meteorologist K Campbell in the wr severe weather center. Here's your weekend forecast looks pretty good. On Saturday, there is a small chance for rain. That would be first thing very early in the morning in our northern counties. The rest of the day looks pretty good, partly cloudy, mid to perhaps upper seventies. By Sunday, it's much cooler. Highs struggle to get into the sixties even. It's a cloudy day and we've got some scattered showers in the forecast Sunday, but we're on the stable side of the front. So we're not severe weather on Sunday and we really could use some rain. We'll get to that in a minute. Let's talk about your Saturday planner because that's going to be the day to be outside 63 at 8 a.m. by noon, 71 and will be in the mid to upper seventies during the afternoon. Still in the low to mid seventies by dinner time. Future cash shows pretty quiet, start to the day. Perhaps a few showers in our northern counties and cloud cover to start, but those clouds clear and we'll see more sunshine later on before we cloud back overnight into Sunday morning. Scattered showers are possible throughout the first part of the day, Sunday and then we'll see a band of steadier rain make its way in as we head into Sunday evening and perhaps Sunday night as well. Early on, we need any rain, we can get the drought monitor showing an expanded region for abnormally dry and yellow. That's the morning stage before you reach drought status. So we really need some rain to prevent drought from developing as we head into the month of May. The system that's bringing our rain chances for your Friday night is this area of low pressure along with a cold front draped to the south. That cold front is going to knock temperatures down as well. We're down to 46 degrees on Monday morning, 44 we had to lower the low Tuesday morning because there's not likely to be as much cloud cover and that's going to allow temperatures to fall even further. But for the weekend morning will wake up to temperatures near 60 Saturday morning and in the lower fifties again on Sunday morning. If you are running the Tar Heel 10 miler, we got some pretty nice weather for it. A 20% chance for rain for early on. Otherwise temperatures will be in the low to mid 60 s. Looks like some pretty good running weather for us. Looking ahead to next week, we're still on the cooler side start 66. But Monday trending more sunshine And then as we get into Tuesday, Wednesday, we're likely to be back in the seventies, Wednesday. We've got a cold front coming the way it looks now. Only a small 20% chance for rain with the front, but it is going to knock temperatures down again. Not as dramatic but low temperatures could be back in the upper forties with highs in the upper sixties to lower seventies toward the end of next week.
