FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Emergency crews airlifted a man from the scene of a wreck in Fayetteville Monday afternoon.

According to police, a man was hit near the intersection of Yadkin and Lake Valley roads, north of Cross Creek Mall, at about 12:30 p.m. Lake Valley Road was closed for about an hour while police and emergency crews cleared the scene.

James Grady Whitt, 49, of Broadway, was riding a scooter and was stopped in traffic when he was hit by a car driven by Mary Samuels Austin, of Bedrock Drive in Fayetteville, police said.

Whitt was conscious and alert and was taken by helicopter to UNC Hospitals, in Chapel Hill. There was no word on his condition Monday afternoon.

Austin was charged with failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

Monday's wreck happened at the same intersection where a motorcyclist lost his life, police said.

Ryan Ciszkowski, 25, of 7514 Telfair Drive in Fayetteville, was riding east on Yadkin Road on Saturday when his motorcycle collided with a Dodge Intrepid near the intersection of Lake Valley Road, police said.

A preliminary investigation determined that the driver of the Intrepid, Georgia Houston, 60, turned in front of the motorcycle. Charges are pending against her, police said.
