Conetoe, N.C. — Five South Edgecombe Middle School students suffered minor injuries when their bus wrecked on N.C. Highway 42 near Conetoe Friday morning.
State troopers said that around 7:20 a.m., the school bus, which was carrying 16 students, ran off the right side of the road and then tipped over, landing on its side.
Five students were transported to Heritage Hospital for examination, said Edgecombe County schools spokeswoman Diane C. LeFiles. The bus driver, Michelle Riggs, 42, of Macclesfield, was uninjured.
Troopers cited Riggs for failing to maintain safe lane control. LeFiles said that Riggs was serving as a substitute for the regular bus driver. Troopers tested her blood for the presence of alcohol or drugs, as is standard procedure after a wreck. The test results were not available Friday afternoon.
The crash did about $800 damage to the bus, school authorities said.
The school notified the parents of all the students on the bus and sent a second bus to transport the uninjured students to school, LeFiles said.
