CLAYTON, N.C. — A school bus was involved in a crash with another vehicle Wednesday morning in Johnston County, and officials say a teenage driver without a license was behind the wheel.

The crash was reported before 8 a.m. in the 1300 block of Guy Road near Clayton.

Video from the scene showed minor damage to the bus, which was involved in a crash with another vehicle.

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol said a high school student was driving the vehicle that crashed into the bus from behind. The 18-year-old driver had a learner's permit only and was not permitted to be driving alone.

Children said their bus was stopped and picking up students when the vehicle slammed into the back of the bus.

According to troopers, the driver said he thought the bus was pulling away when he ran into it. He said he was drinking from a water bottle, which distracted him.

The driver was charged with failing to reduce speed and failure to be accompanied by a licensed driver. He was not injured in the crash and was picked up by his parents.

Students said they felt and heard the impact, and several reported minor injuries, including back pain.
