Shirley Foster, 16, of Durham, was driving to school at about 7 a.m. when her Nissan crossed the center line on U.S. Highway 15 near W.B. Clark Road and collided with the bus, authorities said. About two dozen Creedmoor Elementary School students were on the bus at the time.
A few minor injuries were reported among the students. Foster was taken to Duke University Hospital, where she was listed in critical condition, authorities said.
The students were taken to school on another school bus and arrived a few minutes after the start of classes, said Jane Allen, spokeswoman for Granville County Schools. Parents were notified of the wreck through an automated phone message, and students were allowed to call home after they reached their classrooms, Allan said.
The cause of Foster's car crossing the center line remains under investigation. No charges have been filed yet.
