Orange County Sheriff Charles Blackwood is warning residents of a scam where callers use the name of a law enforcement officer and ask for money.

“This is version of a frequent scam,” Blackwood said. “In this iteration, the scammer uses the name of a person who actually works here. He then informs his victims that the matter can be resolved for a fine of $5,000. Sometimes people panic and fall for the trap. Let me assure everyone: There is no criminal or court matter that can be resolved with gift cards.”

At least six Orange County residents reported getting calls from someone claiming to be Sgt. Ryan Jones with the Orange County Sheriff’s Office. The caller told them he had documents authorizing their arrest for failure to appear in response to a federal subpoena.

Blackwood said the callers are using a computer technology called spoofing to make it appear that the incoming number is the phone number for the sheriff's office. The caller then leaves a message asking the recipient to call back on a different number.

Said Blackwood, “No deputy from my office will ever ask for money or gift cards. If you get such a call, hang up. If you are still worried, feel free to call 911 or call me directly at 919-612-0003. I will be happy to reassure you.”
