NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — A North Myrtle Beach officer died while responding to a call on New Years day, according to WMBF.

Sgt. Gordon William Best was on his way to Barefoot Resort at around 4 a.m. when he lost control of his vehicle on a wet roadway, officials said. Best collided with a utility pole and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Best, 30, has a wife and two young children. He was responding to a call of shots fired.

“Our community is devastated. This is the first police officer we have ever lost in the history of our city,” said North Myrtle Beach Mayor Marilyn Hatley.

Best was promoted to sergeant in February 2019.
