Sanford police searching for 15-year-old suspect after fatal shooting

Sanford, N.C. — Police are searching for a 15-year-old suspect after a man was fatally shot Saturday in a Sanford home.
Officers with the Sanford Police Department responded to a home at 2218 Dalrymple Street around 11 p.m. At the scene, they found Monty Leroy Simmons, 48, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Police say Simmons died at the scene.
Another victim, a 16-year-old female, also sustained gunshot wounds and was transported to UNC in Chapel Hill. She is currently listed in stable condition.
Neighbor Brenda Buchanan said Simmons was a good man.
"He was real nice. He would speak to you, we just spoke to him yesterday. He was looking at some garage sale stuff," she said.
Police said a Secure Custody Order for a 15-year-old juvenile has been obtained for one count of first-degree murder, one count of attempted murder and one count of possession of a firearm by a minor.
Officials on Sunday are actively searching for the suspect. This investigation is ongoing.
Neighbors said they plan to lock their doors and keep this children inside until the suspect is in custody.
"It's scary, not knowing who that 15-year-old is. It could be your neighbor. It could be anybody," Buchanan said.
