SANFORD, N.C. — Strong winds helped dilute a gas leak on Colon Road in Sanford that prompted evacuations and road closures before being shut off Monday morning, fire officials said.

The gas leak began shortly before 8 a.m. at 737 Colon Road, and a N.C. Public Gas crew dug up and shut off the leaking valve by 9 a.m., according to the Sanford Fire Marshall's Office.

Roads were closed, and some buildings in the area were evacuated when the leak was discovered. Officials said the roads have been reopened, and no one was asked to leave their homes.
