Fayetteville, N.C. — A Fayetteville salon owner had got a hair-raising surprise when she became the first person to win the $1 million top prize in the North Carolina Lottery’s $1,000,000 Bonus Cash scratch-off game.
Melanie Bacchus was shopping for a book when she purchased two lottery tickets at the Boulevard Amoco Food Shop on Bragg Boulevard. After two of those tickets produced wins of $50 and $100, she returned to the store and purchased the winning Bonus Cash ticket.
“We jumped for joy,” Bacchus said of the moment she and her fiancé realized they had won $1 million.
Bacchus and her fiancé claimed their prize Monday and chose to accept the winnings in a lump sum payment, going home with $415,503 after taxes.
Bacchus said she plans to use her winnings to pay off bills, invest in her salon and possibly buy a house.
Three more Bonus Cash tickets with top prizes of $1 million remain unclaimed.
